Anybody play any shooters? Not FPSs, scrolling shooters like Gradius or R-Type or Ikaruga or whatever.

I prefer vertical shooters, and mostly play DoDonPachi and Armed Police Batrider, though I've also played quite a bit of Border Down and various other games.

Been back into playing Batrider recently, I've come SO close to clearing without continuing, like, within 4 or 5 seconds of killing the final boss :/ My best run on one credit in DoDonPachi was about halfway through stage 5, I believe.

If Touhou would count then, yes.

I play Touhou quite often; I play Perfect Cherry Blossom and Imperishable Night quite often. I also play Immaterial and Missing Power a lot too, but that doesn't count, I guess, as it's not the typical installment- it's a fighter, instead.

I'm pretty decent at Touhou; came close to clearing PCB with Sakuya on hard (without continuing, of course). I'm not too good at IN, though.

I was really close to OCCing PCB back when I was playing it last, I should start playing it again. I don't remember the names of the characters, but I was using the third one, I think she had a broom.

IN is a lot meaner than PCB, and I haven't put near as much time into it. I can't even remember how far in I managed to get. Really pretty bullet patterns on some of the bosses though.

I've really been meaning to try Shoot the Bullet.

OCC? Huh?

The 3rd character is Sakuya Izayoi; a maid that is encountered on the 5th stage (iirc) of The Embodiment of Scarlet Devil. The one with a broom is Marisa Kirisame, a witch from one of the earlier Touhou games (PC-98 ). Sakuya uses knives; her focus attack is really useful- it homes and it is quite powerful. Marisa has no range whatsoever, but if you're really good at dodging the bullets and staying in line with the enemy, Marisa is amazing, as she is ridiculously amazing in terms of strength.

As for IN, I'd agree. Some of Marisa's (4th stage) spell cards are a little tough to deal with. Keine (3rd stage) is a tad annoying, but because her attacks are laid out in such an organized manner, they're easy to deal with if you practice enough. I find Reisen (5th stage) absolutely impossible, as her attacks are too clumped together and really hard to follow. I never really got to the final stage with enough time or lives (as I don't continue), but the few times I did, the boss there was found to be extremely easy (and I didn't just deal with the first spell card or anything).

Touhou Project's intricate bullet designs have contributed to a lot of its success, hehe.

Shoot the Bullet isn't exactly too amazing, in my opinion. Mountain of Faith is also pretty decent. I'm still sticking with PCB in terms of simplicity, characters, and bullet designs. Imperishable Night has a better plot, graphics, and it also adds the option of a tag team (though without the tag team there really is no specialty with focus attacks).

OK, I used Sakuya then, definitely remember a lot of knives. I'm definitely no expert on the series, PCB was my introduction and IN is the only other title I've got around to playing at all.

OCC = One Credit Clear. Just means you never used a continue, it's a commonly used term with shooters. I personally never continue at all, I feel it completely ruins the experience entirely. I want to have to earn the right to see the next stage Razz

I've played the Touhou Project series chronologically; starting with the beginning PC-98 games like The Highly Responsive to Prayers. Though I may not have gone too far in them (boring after time, confusing, etc.), I moved on with each game.

Embodiment of Scarlet Devil is probably the best game to start on; it's relatively easy, provides a decent outline of the entire project's plot(s) and ideas, and it only starts you off with 2 possible characters. Playing through the game, you'll recognize Sakuya well once you start Perfect Cherry Blossom and such.

If you don't have it, get (Touhou) Immaterial and Missing Power. It's easiest the best doujin fighter that has ever been made, it's pretty well balanced, the dialogue is amusing at times (if you can understand Japanese), and it's just pretty damn awesome.

Totally agree on the OCC part. I'd continued a lot when I was dumber and not knowing anything, really, about shooters.

I've played IAMP for a bit with my roommate. Didn't put a ton of time into it but I do remember liking it.

I'm not sure I would ever say its the BEST doujin fighter ever made, though, because don't forget that Melty Blood Act Cadenza is a doujin fighter Razz I also really love Eternal Figher Zero, and Big Bang Beat can be pretty fun.

I definitely did like the whole feel of IAMP, with the neat shooter influence. Touhou has pretty great character designs too. I'll have to grab it again and mess with it some more.

When I say doujin, I mean as in a game developed by a single person, not as in a group.

IaMP gets a lot more fun once you fully figure out how the game works. Until then, it can be a bit frustrating and difficult.

The Touhou games aren't made by a single person...they're made by Team Shanghai Alice. IaMP was actually a collaboration with Twilight Frontier, so that's definitely more than one person. It is a small team, to be sure; doujin generally just refers to the fact that a big mainstream company didn't do it. It could be made by one person but it's not necessarily restricted to that.

ZUN is the sole member of Team Shanghai Alice. Though it says "Team," it's still a one-man project. I keep forgetting that IaMP is a collab, so yeah.

Anyways, though I'm aware doujin literally means "literary group" or something along the lines of "clique," in can be used to refer to a single person sometimes.

Not like all this matters, anyways; Touhou is still awesome :<

woot IN. I know I didn't clear the whole thing, but since I suck at IN, it's pretty good for me.

Shooters INNormal7135

I died 6 times fighting Reisen, so if that didn't happen I can easily beat this :\

*EDIT*

WOW WHAT THE FUCK

i was playing PCB on normal, and i didn't even die or use a single bomb until i got up to primsriver or whatever (stage 4 boss) and then i died 4 times there on easy dumps and then i died 5 times on one of youmu's spell cards which wasn't that hard either -_-
